The core of DEFICELER is a story of "discovering Narnia through a closet’s hidden doorway": After graduation from Parsons The New School of Design in New York, founder Xingyuan Xu’s journey through the Southwestern region of China revealed the untapped universe of Chinese ethnic textiles.
Founded in 2022, DEFICELER defies the kitsch of "ethnic fashion." The vitality of ethnic textiles proves that they aren’t frozen artifacts—they’re a living, breathing cultural force that transcends geography, history, and preconceptions.
"Narnia behind the closet" becomes our metaphor. Engaging with cultural heritage isn’t about passive museum gazing—it’s an excavation. We dig deeper to derive new narratives.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage
Through a Modern Lens
DEFICELER, as “unstitching” in French, is a Postmodernism - to unstitch the epidemic minimalism exteriors and release the semiotic patterns and colors of ethnic textiles. DEFICELER offers a fresh perspective on the Southwestern Chinese ethnic fashion - a chance to remove exclusivity and seize cross-cultural consensus.
